It is not a discipline that seeks resources for medical cure, but one that places personal responsibility in the broadest social and biological context. It is – or should be – an effort to come up with a brain-based philosophy of life.” Her sier Gazzaniga at det er nevrovitenskapens oppgave å konstruere en filosofi som har sitt fundament i hjernevitenskapens forskning. Med andre ord må det vi vet om hjernen gi konkrete føringer på hva filosofien kan og skal si noe om. En rekke problemstillinger reiser seg i den sammenheng.
